INTRODUCTION

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (USSBA), over 30.7 million new American startup ventures were launched in 2019 alone, implying severe growth in entrepreneurial activity.

Expanding innovation, problem solving and higher community welfare are at the crux of entrepreneurship. Due to the increasing access to information and data, individuals and all sectors have an abundance of opportunities  for improvement. Previous research on the critical perspectives of entrepreneurship is often functionalist in nature, and investigates the diverse phenomenon through an objective lens (Jennings et al., 2005).

Entrepreneurship is cited as a primary tool for creating sustainable  economic growth on a global scale. According to Calás et al. (2009), the normative assumption that entrepreneurship is a positive economic activity in literature has led to a bias and overgeneralization of understanding. Since the field of entrepreneurship is continuously evolving, and interconnecting with various themes that have been previously unexplored, this paper investigates the views of four entrepreneurs in different fields.

Recent trends in empirical evidence investigate themes such as ethics, social networks, technology, firm performance and gender (Business Research and Information Development Group, 2003).  While there are a plethora of potential entrepreneurial themes to explore, the focus of this paper is on idea generation for social wellbeing through problem solving and innovation.  There is great scope for improved innovation to achieve social development goals while solving problems and gaining profits.

In this paper, I investigate how innovation and problem solving have been used to address social goals. Further, I identify common entrepreneurial traits through empirical interview-based data and literature review based on entrepreneurial traits. Based on previous research, I hypothesize that the crucial theme of all entrepreneurship is based on identifying problems or opportunities. This paper will contribute to discussion and research about entrepreneurial behavior.

Policies to encourage entrepreneurial activity are extremely important for economic development. In order to develop effective policies, it is crucial to understand concepts of entrepreneurial behavior and the factors that influence activity. Additionally, given the barriers and risks associated with entrepreneurship, my research provides potential determinants and guidance for entrepreneurs when evaluating ideas.
